Mivule

Mivule is a Vancouver-based 4-piece which incorporates the sounds of Reggae, Afrobeat and Dub, with lyrics in English and various African languages. The name “Mivule” is derived from the Mivule Tree, which is a type of teak wood tree found in Uganda. The tree is a place where the village meets to settle disputes. Mivule represents a collaborative process of making peace. After almost a year of work, Mivule has released their debut album. Featuring 11 tracks, this compilation of songs was recorded in seven different Western Canadian studios, and was largely produced by the band. The songs have been arranged to create studio versions that are much larger-sounding than their live versions. Tracks include horn sections, backing vocals, and many instrumental overdubs to give them a full sound. The album is equal parts reggae and African music. Some songs live at an intersection of these, making this album a unique offering. The album covers a range of the band’s material. Sweet songs such as Unconditional Love and Never Run Away contrast with edgier sounds of Abana and Mr. Politician. Mivule thanks the Canada Council for the Arts for making this project possible.
